Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a patient-centred system of health care. Osteopaths have a well-deserved reputation for expertise in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide-range of musculoskeletal conditions, such as low back, neck, joint, muscle and arthritic pain.

Osteopaths take a holistic approach to patient treatment and care. Osteopaths use a combination of soft tissue mobilisation, stretching, articulation and manipulation directed at the patients muscles and joints to relieve pain, improve function, restore normal movement and assist in recovery.

Osteopaths believe that the body has an innate natural ability to heal itself and that their role is to support and ease this process in order to reinstate optimal health and well-being.

Conditions We Treat

We specialise in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, such as:

  • Low back pain (acute and chronic)
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Nerve pain and sciatica
  • Joint pains
  • Generalised aches and pains
  • Arthritic pain / osteoarthritis
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pregnancy and post-natal related muscle and joint issues
  • Elbow pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Headache arising from the neck (cervico-genic)
  • Minor sports injuries
  • Rheumatic pain

What to Expect

The initial consultation will consist of the following elements:

  • Taking an in-depth case and health history
  • Evaluation and assessment
  • Treatment
  • Development of a treatment plan and aftercare advice
  • This will take about 45 - 60 mins.

The follow-up consultation and treatments are 30 minutes and will predominantly consist of re-evaluation of symptoms and treatment. We will also discuss any changes since the previous treatment.

Assessment and Treatment

Please make sure you wear comfortable and loose fitted clothing. Depending on where you are experiencing your pain, some clothing may need to be removed for safe and appropriate evaluation and treatment. However, towels will be available so patient comfort can be maintained throughout.

Treatment techniques can involve the following:

  • Soft tissue mobilisation and stretching
  • Joint articulation and mobilisation
  • Joint manipulation (where appropriate)
  • Muscle Energy Techniques
  • Kinesiology taping (sports taping)

Ongoing Treatment

Musculoskeletal conditions may require more than one visit before your problem is resolved. We will review your progress at each subsequent follow-up appointment and seek your consent to any changes to your treatment plan or management. Often musculoskeletal conditions require some additional self-care, including gentle exercise or rehabilitation. We can provide this care and sign-post you to appropriate self-care strategies and resources.
